View Full Version : Cold Air Intake Confusion?

Okay, I'm running the K&N kit on my Stang. K&N rates it +15.26hp without a tune. I spoke to Fastlane and they recommended the Steeda or like a MAC intake for about 250 bucks that adds about 25hp. Here's the catch, those intakes require a tune due to the bigger mass air sensor. To do a tune and dyno is 650 more bucks! Well, I did some math, I do not have a tune yet. My car let's say did get an extra 15.26hp from the K&N. Well if I tuned the car with the K&N, I should get at least 10 more hp to match the other intakes, right? I can spend 399 and get a Diablosport, I can perform a tune pretty well myself, done some before. I can always dyno again in the future to check my #'s. I just can't see spending 900 bucks to add a difference of 2hp with those intakes when I can tune my car for 399 and gain at least 10 more hp. My .02.

Joe, not sure, from what I read in other post I thought you were going to get a SC, I was in a similiuar situation where I got a SCT Tune with a Steeda CAI along with some Pulleys, wasted money when only 2 months later I got a SC that came with a tuner and with no need for a CAI or the pullies...however if you have decided that SC isn't gonna come on until way later, then I'd consider getting a CAI.

Joe, stay with what you have. I wouldn't spend the money to get a tune at this point. I wouldn't change your intake setup. IMO too much money for what it will yield. Your car is making good power as it is. I would wait until you have done more with the car before purchasing a tune.

My Christmas check for work is pretty good. I have been juggling back and forth for a while with natural aspiration and SC for a while. I just can't make the SC work for now.:banghead: But I can make great power with all motor. Here are the plans:
Keep K&N set up
Keep Flowmasters
X-Pipe
Ford Racing Headers
Diablosport tune
Rousch Pulleys
Then I will dyno, that should be more hp while not breaking my budget.

Sounds good, I would like to hear an x pipe & flowmasters in person. Now what headers are you looking at?

My current flowmasters on the car now are the 40 series Delta, the headers I am ordering are Ford Racing, I lke their looks and styler better than the BBk. IMO

Are the Ford Racing headers shorties/mid length/long tube?
not much gain in shorties.

Long tubes. BBK has long too. Browsing Summit now. :)

No sorry, shorty headers, said it will sound better. The long tubes might interfere with the x-pipe I am getting.

I second what chromebullitts has said. I would not spend the money on shorties as you just aren't going to see enough power for your money. I wouldn't change the cold air system you have. I wouldn't get a tune at this point. And I definately wouldn't get a Dialblo chip. SCT is the way to go and eventually if you plan to put a supercharger on your car, you'll realize that SCT has far more capabilities to give you the right tune.
What you really need to do is sit down and figure out exactly what you are going to do with your car and then map out the order in which things need to get done and then you'll see what you can spend your money on. Sounds like to me that you have money burning a hole in your pocket and you want to get it spent on your car, but if you don't plan it out, you'll be spending more money on parts you didn't need.
Just my opinion, that and $1.25 will get you a coffee.

Well here is the thing, I did sit down as suggested and took a look at the big pic. I got up with some people and we all put our heads together to figure this thing out. I spoke to some reputable Stang guys and several club members and got the same information regarding the headers from everyone. The short and long tube headers weren't much different in the power adder department. Also the x-pipe I got will have major clearance problems with the long tube headers. So I went with the shorter ones. The tune for right now I like is the Diablosport, sorry for those who love the SCT, a blower is not in the closest future for me. :banghead:The pulleys were a no brainer to get the Rousch. I think I am content with what I have for my little project, now the fun is just putting it all on the car. Thanks for everyone's input. I think my numbers should be pretty darn close, I will see definatley in March at Fastlane, and a little sooner for the et.'s when I take a trip down to Fayettville.:Track:
