I have a 68 Coupe resto project that I am working on and I have a quick question.

The car sat up for quite some time and I need to get the old gas out of the gas tank. What is the easiest way to go about doing this? Can I buy an orange handle kerosene pump or does the pipe have an anti-siphon screen?

FYI

The car sat up for roughly 10 years. I pulled the plugs and put a tablespoon or so of marvel mystery oil in each cylinder. I let that sit for 2 hours and I could turn the motor over by the fan. I am in need of a starter, battery, and cables. Those will be purchased soon.

Thanks in advance.

If the gas has been sitting a long time and the tank is original I would recommend just replacing the tank. Sludge builds up and can cause performance issues. Not matter what cleaners and tank additives you try, nothing will get all of the gunk out. New tanks are not that expensive - saw one on Car Parts Discount for $69.00

Swapping the tank isn't a bad weekend job either. You '68 should be pretty simple.

Getting a new tank is the best bet from what was said. If you spend the time and money to drain the old one, it would stink to put new gas in that tank and find out you have the problem now of sludge. As mestengo mentioned, sludge is evil. Newer tank shouldn't be too expensive. :)

Thanks!

I'll start shopping around for one.

I agree, I have done that before on other vehicles. Old gas will rot the tank and the rust will be sucked into the carb. Tank replacement is easy and painless.
