I recently acquired red a '64 1/2 coupe. A previous owner swapped out the stock six cylinder and tranny for a 302 V8 and 5-speed. I reallly wanted the 5-speed tranny which is why I got it.

It needs quite a bit of work, though the body is in pretty good shape--even the cowls are solid, by some bizarro stroke of luck. Driver's side floor pan has some holes though.

The needed work is mostly on the mechanical side, well, electrical - the wiring is pretty messed up. In fact it has no spark at the moment, but I know it runs because I saw it run. I'm working on chasing that gremlin now.

I'm replacing the front drums with discs (MC is dead anyway) and replacing the 7.5" rear end with an 8", mainly because the new discs are 5 lug and I currently have 4 lug hubs.

I have some new leaf springs to install as well.

It needs a new front seat frame, as it is busted but the covering is good. In fact it has plenty of non-critical items that need fixing: drivers side mirror, heater vents replaced, new bulbs, etc...

And I'm going to install rear seat belts for my kids.

But alll in all, it's a great car, sounds bad, has lots of power and should be a blast! And it's great to get my hands greasy and dirty again after a long hiatus from working on cars.

I look forward to pariticipating and meeting folks!

-Nate

nice to meet you i would be very interest in looking at your car in person so i can see how the 302 sits in there and also interested in how the 5 speeds looks. i have a haynes manual on the way and you can look at the wiring diagrams in there ...

Thanks. You're more than welcome to check out the car. I can't start the motor right now though. What the haynes manual for - car/year?

That was was of those inside jokes, Nate. Dustin has done a lot of work on the wiring in his car lately. He may not want to do any electrical work for a while. I'm sure you'll find plenty of others here that are willing to help.

Thanks for the clarification. I may be feeling like he does pretty soon. :-)

I would just replace it all... get a painless wiring system and use the old wires as a guide. Lay in the new wiring along side the old and then last take the old out after your new wiring has been tested.

Thanks - I've definitely considered that, although I have some time pressure just to get it running. But I'm starting to lean in that direction because the wiring is such a mess on this thing. Even if I do get it running as is, replacing the wiring will be one of my top prioritites.

It's going to be a bit extra challenging I think because I'm going from the old generator (64 1/2) wiring to newer alternator wiring, and also because of the more modern ignition system, though that part of it isn't that bad.

Because much of the ignition wiring and thus color-coding has been modified, the wiring diagrams and forum discussions are almost useless to me, when they refer to various color coding. Frustrating.

I like your tip of laying in the new alongside the old - makes a lot of sense!

Also painless has more "custom" systems, you can call them and ask. If my memory serves me they have modern wiring system for classics that even include such things as electric locks and window wiring. They also provide wiring diagrams with thier products.

I have yet to use thier products, but plan to when I get there b/c of all the good things I've heard.
