What do you guys think about using drag radials (mickey tompson, BF goodridge type) on an 01 cobra Independant rear suspension? Do you think it will hold up or **** up?:mustang:

I have never owned an IRS car, but if I did I would not do this unless it was strengthened or supported in some way. Better to break the tires off a bit instead of breaking the rear end.

I had mine snap a halfshaft with a 305/35/18 nitto drag radial.
But the IRS does take a good beating. As long as you slip the clutch and arnt to hard on it I think you will be fine.
You could always put a soild axle in it also.

I would have to agree with Drew. I would look into a solid axle if you plan to do a lot of drag racing. It's hit or miss when attempting to use sticky tires with the IRS.
You could buy stronger half shafts that could hold up better than the stock ones.
If you plan to take the risk, trailer it to the track.

I don't go race it that often, but I like the way the IRS handles. Think I'll stick with the street tires for now, thanks for the advice guys

If you upgrade the half-shafts and stick to DRs (no full out slicks) you can get away with it, though of course realize that it will still break more often that a live axle. I have a buddy in Maryland that was running mid/low 10s at 140 (04 Terminator with Hellion Single Turbo) on level 5 half-shafts on DRs.

yea the only problem with upgrading halfshafts braces etc.. is that level 5 halfshafts are like 2k. I just dont see why people pay that, must be in love with their IRS. YOu can have a built rear for 1k and it weighs 100lbs less will give you a lil more power and is stronger.

I must admit, I'm in love with my IRS. I'm taking her out later today. :)

I really like my IRS and dont want to go solid either...but something you may want to look at is a cross-member or,
Steda calls it a STOP-HOP. The stop-hop bolt onto your gear box and strengthen the aluminum hub, it'll keep you from blowing out the rear end. steeda part #s are 555-2341 cross member and 161M 5030 Stop hop. Check them out.
There is also a great write up on IRS Cobras suspensions at SVT Performance, you can google it. I'll send a PM later with directions to the artical.
