My 68 GT has a 4 barrel carb with Autolite stampings. The info tag on the side of the carb has the following numbers. I am looking for a rebuild kit.

Autolite
C8ZF C
B8E2

Is this carb original? It has 2 adapter plates connecting it to the intake. I've done some tooling around on google and I couldn't really find anything. All help is appreciated.

That's a '68 vintage carb. Do you have a 289 or 302? Auto or manual trans?

The B8E2 is the date stamp, which would decipher to May of '68, which should coincide with the assembly date of your car.

You can get a carb rebuild kit from just about any parts store in the area or order online.

Just remembered you have a J code manual, that is probably the original carb from your car.

The two adapter plates kinda threw me off. I wasn't sure if that was original.

I got the car cranked. The overflow tubes are spitting gas and I have a fuel filter leak right at the threads. When I took the old filter out a few starter threads came with it. I'm gonna get a rebuild kit and make it right.

I'll shop around and see what I can find.

Those carbs are fairly common. If you're not concerned about originality, you might consider going with an aftermarket Holley or Edelbrock carb for normal driving and box up the original. The 4300 carbs are a little bit of a pain to keep up.

I am concerned with original equipment. I'd like to keep the car as close to original as possible other than converting the front drums to disc brakes. Possibly the rear brakes to disc as well. Mostly for safety reasons.

I'll do some calling around for the carb rebuild kit.

If I recall correctly, a '68 GT should have had front disc brakes. Did you get the Marti report?

The front discs with power booster will be plenty of stopping power, no need for rear disc, which over-complicates things with your car (rearend, parking brake cables, etc...)

I did not get the Marti report yet. I've deciphered the door tag and that's about it. My 68 definately came stock with drums all the way around.

National Parts Depot has a rebuild kit for 67-69 Autolite 4300 carbs for $29.95. The part number is 9A586-14. The phone # for their NC store is 800-368-6451 (704-331-0900). The 4300 replaced the Autolite 4100 in 1967 for most 4V applications. The 68 version was somewhat improved.

Happy Rebuilding :)
