I just picked put a set of used Catback exhaust mufflers for my Cobra, and the chrome tips need cleaning, their not blue'd like headers, but are covered with road grit and some brown burning...I'd like to polish them up. Any suggestions as to the best way to do this?

Hi, Not sure what everyone else uses, but Ariel uses the Mr Clean X-tra strength Magic Eraser! After using he just wipes the build-up off :) Leaves no marks or residue... :)

I have used 4 aught (0000) steel wool or mother's polish and had good luck. Slowryde's way sounds much better, I'll have to give it a try.

Thanks, I'll give it try this week end. I may have to use both! the stuff is baked on!

If the tips are chrome, I would first spray them down with some chrome wheel cleaner. The acid content will loosen the rubber and grime and bring back a nice shine (I'm such the poet). I would follow the directions on which ever product you get because leaving that stuff on too long can eat at the chrome.

I got the cat tips cleaned...took me about three hours and lots of elbow grease. The mr. clean and wheel cleaner didn't help on the first clean up,that stuff was baked on! I ended up using the cleaner Sharon uses on our flat top electric stove, it cut through the baked on brown crud and left a nice polished look. I used some rubbing coumpound and the 4-0 wool to clean of some off the rough spots. When all was done I used the mr. clean for a final clean up. All in all they look real good....Almost like new! Thanks every one for your help, I think if I keep up with the cleaning the road crud won't be so hard to get off. I did find the mr. clean pads were good for some spot cleaning on my wheels, I'll keep them in my arsenal of cleanng supplies.

Just got to put them on ruby now.

Glad to hear you were able to clean them! Sounds like it was quite the job! The tips we have aren't very old, so the Mr Clean works well on them. I imagine if they were built up and had stuff burned on, it wouldn't do the trick by itself. Just for regular cleaning tho, they do well. :)
