All,
I have a fox body that needs a little work in the surfacing dept. What do I do about the paint and the knicks in the clear coat can they wet sand the clear coat and just resurface that? What about the bumper thingy the trim the goes around the car at mid level, that needs to be fixed as well or is it easier to go to a junk yard?

If the paint is able to be washed, claybar'd, and waxed, and still have a gloss shine, you most likely not need to re-paint the car. Once that is done, use an orbital buffer on some of the nicks. If you wet sand it, the clear coat will have lots of swirls and noticeable scratches. That will have to be re-buffed anyway. As for the trim, if it is bad, take it off paint it and put it back on. Or use some Armor All to get that glossy finish back.

Nick... if youi are looking for a good body shop at a good price. I got a quote from a body shop in Sanford to re-paint myu whole "93 Fox Body, and even repaint the door trim on the upper and center of the door (where the door meets the 1/4 window.) The quote was for $1,600.00. The guys name is Trey at Powers Auto Body (if i remeber the name correctly) phone number... 1-919-498-3409

It's been my experience with paint jobs and body work that you get what you pay for.
To answer your question, if the paint on the car was a base/clear paint job and the color coat is not damaged, just scratches in the clear, then the car could possibly be lightly sanded and recleared and buffed. However if you have noticable scratches they are more then likely into the color coat which means the color needs to be resprayed as well.
If you car has a one stage enamel on it, like what's used at Maaco and Earl Scheib, the only way to fix scratches is to repaint.
If you post up some pics of the flaws I may be able to better tell you what needs to be done.
