I will be seeing this movie tonight. I read both of James Bradley's books "Flags of our Fathers" and "Flyboys"...(no not the crappy WWI movie w/ James Franco).

I thought both books were brilliant and quite important. I believe every American should read them, not just see the movies. However I couldn't bring myself to see "Flags". It was a little to close to home while it was in the theaters.

Of course Clint Eastwood directed and shot both Letters/Flags at the same time so it should be interesting since "Letters" is completely in Japanese.

I also read on James Bradley's website that Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks/HBO will be doing "Flyboys" alla "Band of Brothers" which of course I can't wait for b/c "Band of Brothers" is probably the best film ever shot about WWII, that I've seen.

Anyway "Letters of Iwo Jima" has been nominated for the "Best Picture" Oscar, so I will report back later tonight.

I have to entirely agree with you, Bad of Brothers was simply the BEST movie I've ever seen. I haven't yet red Flags of Our Fathers but it to is must read and see being a former Marine it's kinda mandatory. I'll have to get that other book, I haven't heard of Flyboys, but I love reading and watching about WWII, so I'll defintly have to check that out.

And I must be living under a rock, cause this is the first I heard of Letters, sounds like some great movies!!

Okay...um,

1. The movie has really crappy CGI for what few battle scences there were.

2. The movie is historically inaccuarte, to the point of dishonesty. Nothing was mentioned of the Japanese coercing civilians to kill themselves...and my favorite was when a Japenese officer shot a Marine then had his men carry the Marine inside a cave to be treated...then when two Japenese soldiers tried to surrender they were murdered by US Marines. Also nothing was said about the ritualistic beheadings, torture, and canibalism that was practiced by the Japanese.

3. The movie is an anti war film "we are all the same...I was wrong about the Americans, we would make grand allies". Which is all good but you can't take a Historical event such as the Battle of Iwo Jima and turn it into a political statement. I feel this movie is a disgrace to every Soldier, Sailor, and Marine who fought in the Pacific theater...not to mention an absolute insult to the people of Asia and the Pan-Pacific Islands who suffered tremendously under Japanese occupation.

4. The only good thing was that Ken Watanabe who played General Tadamichi Kuribayashi and Hiroshi Abe who played Lt. Colonel Oiso were excellent.
